Region IX Hosts the Drum Major for Justice Competition
Region IX hosted its 2025 MLK Drum Major for Justice Competition and awarded cash scholarships to the top four student finalists.
Erikah Sanders won 1st Place and will represent Region IX at the NBA 100th Annual Convention in Chicago. Nyema Bryant placed 2nd, Angelia Richardson 3rd, and Erikah Washington 4th. Region IX obtained sponsors for the regional competition so that larger scholarships could be awarded to the students.
Volunteer judges included Charles Houston Bar Association Vice President and Alameda County District Attorney Courtney Burris; Region IX Deputy Director, NBA Treasurer, and Director of the Risk Management Program at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Yuri Walker; Richard T. Fields Bar Association President Kamola Gray; Past President of the Wiley Manuel Bar Association, Contra Costa Assistant District Attorney, and law professor Alana Mathews; and Region IX Director Terrance J. Evans.
Special thanks to the Charles Houston Bar Association and the National Bar Association for sponsoring the competition, and to Mariah Cooks and Courtney Burris for coaching the students and editing their essays.
